So, you ask, what is freemasonry all about? It is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political organisations, based on fraternal and charitable principles. Although we cannot tell you what happens in our meetings before you become a member, we can tell you that we all go through the same three ceremonies regardless of rank or position in life. In the first ceremony you are taught how to respect others and to think of those less fortunate than yourself. In the second, you learn the benefit and importance of improving yourself through education; and finally, in the third ceremony, how to make the most of your one life so that “you live respected and die regretted”.
You probably have many more questions than can be answered in a short leaflet such as this, so we recommend looking at the FAQs on the website of United Grand Lodge (United Grand Lodge – FAQs). Have a look, also, at the videos (United Grand Lodge – Videos) to hear what freemasons have to say about their reasons for joining.
